100 stickers!

She’s done it Mrs Millington! 100 stickers! We’ll be first in the queue when Flamingo Land reopens!

I’m so proud of you! Well done! I knew you’d do it. Can’t wait to hear about all of the rides. Keep up the great work!

From building a bug hotel to teaching phonics!

Dear Mrs Millington,

I wanted to say hi. Hope you’re having a nice time.

I just wanted to share what I’ve been doing since we broke up from school.

My mum set me a nature topic, we have built a bug hotel, helped my dad build a pond and Robyn and I made a wormery. I have been busy doing school work in a morning and our topic in an afternoon. I have been pretending to be Robyn’s nursery teacher and teaching her phonics that’s why there’s a picture of me in pretend  glasses.

Hope to see you all soon.

Barnsley in Bloom Competition

Barnsley Council’s annual Barnsley in Bloom poster competition will still go ahead, despite schools being closed. This year, instead of children designing their artwork in school, they are encouraged to get creative at home.
The poster competition will run from Wednesday 15 to Thursday 30 April. Children up to the age of 16 are encouraged to draw their best Barnsley in Bloom picture on a sheet of A4 paper, take a picture of it and email it to parkservices@barnsley.gov.uk with the subject: ‘Barnsley in Bloom entry’. Include the child’s age and name in your email. This year there is no specific theme – just get inspired by nature and the flowers blooming around your home this spring. Use colours and paints to brighten up your picture.

There will be three age categories: six and under, seven to 11 and 12-16. Our park services team will judge and shortlist the artwork, and then the Mayor will choose one winner from each age category. Each winner will receive a certificate over email, and their artwork will be shared on Barnsley Council’s social media channels, so everyone in the borough can celebrate them.
Cllr Pauline Markham, Mayor of Barnsley, said; “This year we’re doing the Barnsley in Bloom competition slightly differently, but we still want all of Barnsley’s budding young artists to get involved. This fun activity should hopefully keep children entertained for a while at home, and I encourage families to stick their artwork in their window so that other children can enjoy spotting them on their daily exercise.

“I’m sorry that I won’t be able to welcome the winners to lunch with me at the Town Hall, but hopefully they will enjoy seeing their artwork being celebrated online.”

This news is linked to Town Spirit, our new way of working better together. We believe, that if everyone in Barnsley does just one thing, we can make our borough a more welcoming place to live, work, invest and visit.

Having fun at home!

I’ve been busy!

Have a look at my video –

From Hoyland to Birdwell!

Hi Mrs Millington,

We decided to walk all the way back home from Hoyland to Birdwell. I really enjoyed it, we saw the war memorial. We went to the cemetery and my mum showed me where my great great grandparents are buried. We also saw some gravestones with dates as far back as 1920 and 1898! We saw a big church too and also saw a pigeon perched on a fence. We also saw a butterfly resting. We are back home now very tired and hungry ready for our tea. Hope to see you soon.

Another day another book! This time from our favourite illustrator – Axel Scheffler

Hi Year 1,

We have found a book that explains all about the Coronavirus and just look at the illustrations. I know we love books by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler so this is perfect!

Read it together with a parent and you can learn all there is to know, about the virus. Also what you can do, to keep yourself well.

Happy reading,

Love Mrs Millington and Miss O’Neill x

Look what I found on my walk!

We saw this tree, this was shaped like a wavy tree very lumpy bumpy. Not like a straight tree. There is a picture of a conifer tree. There were 2 different types, one had smaller leaves and finer leaves than the other. We spotted very tiny baby daffodils they are a lot smaller than some others we have seen. They are small like me. I took a picture of another pretty pink flower.

Morning walk

We saw this huge tree! My mum asked me to stand with my brother to see how tall we were against the tree.

It’s very big! Taller than a house! On this tree we found these funny shapes. My mum says they are knots in the tree, like when we get out shoe laces knotted or someones hair gets knotted. Very funky shapes.

A phonics morning!

Good morning Mrs Millington,

This morning I’ve been doing my phonics. I found this very fun to do especially writing sentences with some of the words my mum chose. Have a lovely day.

Outdoor maths trail

How many things can you find in your garden or out on your daily walk?

Take a photo and let’s see who can find the most!

What have you been reading?

You could use these questions to write your own book review.

If you send them to me, I will put them on the blog. Which book would you recommend to others and why?

Look out for book reviews from your friends!

Happy reading!

Read, read, read!

Hi Year 1 it’s me again!

I know how much you all love reading so I’ve added a reading comprehension for you to do. The questions are in the next two posts. Remember to keep going back to the story. That’s where you’ll find the answers!

I’m missing our daily story time!

Stay safe and take care. x

Read, read, read!

How many questions did you get right? You could send me a photo of your answers for the blog.

To challenge yourself you could read a story and make up your own questions. Ask a brother/sister or adult to answer them!

Have fun!

Measures

Hi Year 1,

Have a go at answering the questions.

Measures challenge

Compare objects – Can you find something longer than a spoon?

Find an object shorter than the TV remote.

Find two objects that are the exact same length!

Phase 5 graphemes for phonics bingo!

Hi Year 1,

Who wants to play phonics bingo? How many words can you read and spell?

You’ve all played this before but just a reminder.

  1. Find someone to play against.
  2. Choose 6 words from the word mat. Write them down.
  3. Ask a brother/sister or adult to say a word. If you’ve got it on your paper, cross it off.
  4. Get all 6 words and shout bingo!

Photos from India in Year 4

Hi Year 1,

I was in school last week. For a couple of days, I was the only child in school with the teachers! School is crazy without all the other kids here but on the bright side I get the whole playground to myself!

We had lots of fun!

I thought you’d want to see some photos of your classroom.

There’s a tiger in my living room!

We had a tiger in our house😂 I rode my bike I’m so good now, we did some science we did about Camouflage. We had fun rolling down the hill.

I’m missing you xx

Cartoon Workshop

Mrs Millington sent me this link last week, to use with the children who were still in school. We tried it and loved it! I thought you might like to try it too. If you enjoy it just click on the next lesson. They are only a few minutes long but really entertaining and have really improved my art skills ( you know I need a lot of help with art! ) Can’t wait to see your cartoons.
Missing you all – stay safe.
Love Miss O’Neill

I’ve been keeping busy!

Salt dough fun!

Space Station – visible tonight!

Look up into the sky tonight at 7.41 pm and International Space Station will be visible overhead for 4 minutes. It appears from WSW and disappears ESE ( you can use your compass on your phone for this) It is a bright light that tracks across the sky. If you have access to the internet you can google – How many people in space right now? and it will let you know which astronauts are aboard, how long they have been there and their nationalities.

Hi Year 1!

Hope you’re all ok and keeping safe.

Who’s been doing the Joe Wicks PE workout? What a great way to start your day!

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

So what have you been up to? Leave a comment and let me know!

If you’ve ran out of things to do, you’ve got plenty of work to be getting on with in your pack. Plus I’ve added a list of more great websites for you to go on.

Don’t forget to use Mathletics  – you could end up playing live against a friend in class. Who’ll get the most points?

Read, read, read! Remember to ask an adult to question you about the book. Impress them with how much you know. Tell them what’s happened in the story, who the main character was and if the story is similar to another book.

Can’t wait to hear from you!

Missing you all and hope to see you soon.

Mrs Millington x

Amazing Australia Topic!

Here are some of the pieces of work we have done at home based on our Australia Topic.

Eliza made a kangaroo: “I knew our topic was Australia and Kangaroos live in Australia and no other country”

Aabrita: “I made a Parrott because they are so cute and found in Australia”

Alice: “I made a Koala because they are linked to Australia”

Indi: ” I made a Koala because they are very good at climbing and are part of Australia”

We liked reading…Stick man!

We are really enjoying reading Stick Man this week. Take a look at some of the comments our class have made about the story and what they enjoyed about it.

We celebrated the Lunar New Year!

We learnt all about the Chinese Zodiac and acted it out. We discovered that we have all been born in the Year of the Snake or the Year of the Horse. We tried spring rolls and made lucky envelopes and Chinese dragons, finally we learnt (or tried to!) say “Happy New Year” in Chinese and did some Chinese dancing. It was a lovely day.

Stanley’s Stick

Welcome to our new topic ‘Here, There and Everywhere’ with a focus on the book ‘Stanley’s Stick’. After reading the book, we loved to discuss what Stanley uses his stick for.

Take a look at some of our writing and drawings all about what Stanley did with his stick. We used our imaginations on what we would use our sticks for too!

Visiting Santa at Wentworth!

We have had a very special day seeing Santa today at Wentworth farm! We told him all about what we love about Christmas and what presents we would like. We were lucky enough to receive a present too!

We also visited the farm animals and saw some very cute little piglets!

Reading Challenge!

Today we have done our reading challenge celebration in the hall!

We have had a great morning enjoying all the different sports activities.

Take a look at some of the photos.

Our Visit to the Chapel

We visited Birdwell Methodist Chapel and met the Minister Mrs Ellie Peet. We had lots of fun discovering symbols of Christianity and especially loved the stained glass window.

The changing Seasons!

We have taken our learning outdoors to explore the changing seasons. We have spoke about how the leaves change colour and what happens to the trees in Autumn and Winter.

Take a look at some pictures from our exploration of the outdoors around school!

Part Whole Maths

In our maths learning this week, we are looking at part whole models. We have split numbers into parts and used real objects to represent amounts.

We have also talked about how to use greater than, equals and less than symbols when comparing two numbers up to ten.

Take a look at some of our amazing learning from this week!

We met JoJo!

Today JoJo and her owner Jude came to Year 1 to meet us all. JoJo listened to children read and she was extremely impressed. Jude gave us all an information talk on how we behave around guide dogs which was very interesting. JoJo enjoyed listening to the children read so much that Jude said she will come back again soon.

Visit to the Farm!

Today Year 1 and Reception class have been to Wigfield farm!

We have had a great day meeting all the lovely animals and we even got up close to some reptiles. When we arrived, we got into three groups and each fed the animals, met the reptiles and met some new born piglets.

Take a look at the lovely pictures from our trip!

Heavy or Light? Weights!

In our maths learning, we have focused on weights and measuring all week!

We have talked about what items are heavier and what items are lighter. We also looked at the items that are equal weight and weigh the same.

We then moved onto weighing items on scales and what heavy, light and equal weights look like on the scales. Then we decided to create our own scales using our bodies!

Take a look!
