Photos from India in Year 4

Hi Year 1,

I was in school last week. For a couple of days, I was the only child in school with the teachers! School is crazy without all the other kids here but on the bright side I get the whole playground to myself!

We had lots of fun!

I thought you’d want to see some photos of your classroom.

Amazing Australia Topic!

Here are some of the pieces of work we have done at home based on our Australia Topic.

Eliza made a kangaroo: “I knew our topic was Australia and Kangaroos live in Australia and no other country”

Aabrita: “I made a Parrott because they are so cute and found in Australia”

Alice: “I made a Koala because they are linked to Australia”

Indi: ” I made a Koala because they are very good at climbing and are part of Australia”

Visiting Santa at Wentworth!

We have had a very special day seeing Santa today at Wentworth farm! We told him all about what we love about Christmas and what presents we would like. We were lucky enough to receive a present too!

We also visited the farm animals and saw some very cute little piglets!

We met JoJo!

Today JoJo and her owner Jude came to Year 1 to meet us all. JoJo listened to children read and she was extremely impressed. Jude gave us all an information talk on how we behave around guide dogs which was very interesting. JoJo enjoyed listening to the children read so much that Jude said she will come back again soon.

Visit to the Farm!

Today Year 1 and Reception class have been to Wigfield farm!

We have had a great day meeting all the lovely animals and we even got up close to some reptiles. When we arrived, we got into three groups and each fed the animals, met the reptiles and met some new born piglets.

Take a look at the lovely pictures from our trip!

Firefighter Visit!

Today we were lucky enough to have a visit from a real fire fighter!

We had lots of questions to ask him about what he does for his job, and what equipment he uses to help him in his job.

It was interesting to find out how the equipment is different to the ones used in the Great Fire of London.

Take a look at some of the pictures from his talk!

Katie in London!

This week our focused reading has been on ‘Katie in London’. We have really enjoyed this amazing book and we have enjoyed linking it to our current topic of the Great fire of London too with all the famous landmarks!

We also looked at the ‘ng’ phoneme and where to find this blend in a word. Take a look at our interactive lessons from this week.

London in 1666

We have been learning all about what objects and buildings where around at the time of the Great Fire of London. We have looked at how the houses would have been built and how these would have set on fire easily.

Then we talked about what things people would have used to put out the fire, like fire hooks and leather buckets.

Creating some Great Fire artwork!

Today we thought about what the fire of London would have looked like when it began in 1666. We described lots of scenes, using adjectives to describe the setting. Then we used our senses to explore the smells and sounds.

We created some amazing artwork based on colour wash and silhouettes of the London skyline in 1666.

Take a look!

Circle time in Year 1

We did Circle Time and discussed how words can make us feel. Kind words make us feel soft and fluffy but words that are unkind feel scratchy!

Bread Making

When we went on our school trip to Worsbrough Mill we found out how flour was made and that we can make many different things from the flour. Today we have used our flour to make bread. To do this we have had to do lots of things. First, we had to mix all our ingredients together, then we had to need our bread. Miss Wright and Miss Bebb then took our bread to prove and bake in the oven. We were so excited when our bread came back, it smelt delicious! We’ve had lots of fun making our bread!

Eddie and his adventures!

Eddie has been so lucky this year to have been able to go on lots of different adventures with the children in Year 1. He’s been to the zoo, seaside, BBQ’s, parks and so many more wonderful places. All the children in Year 1 have had so much fun and have been working really hard to take Eddie home. Eddie can’t wait to go on many more adventures in the next few weeks.

Working Hard

Today we have been working really hard in all our lessons. In literacy we have had lots of fun, as we have been writing our very own version of Jack and the Beanstalk, so look out for them popping up on our blog in the next couple of weeks. In maths we have been working on our dividing skills and have been using this to help us answer really challenging questions! Here are some pictures of us working hard…

African Animal Yoga

Today we have done our last session of African Animal Yoga. The children have really enjoyed journeying through Africa and taking on the yoga poses of the animals we have imagined we have seen. Today we wore our animal masks and made up our own yoga poses in groups to share with the class for those animals.

After Easter our PE lesson will still be on a Wednesday morning but Mr Taylor and Mr Smith will be taking the class!

Friday afternoon at Birdwell Primary

Maxine is proud of her puddings, Reception class are recapping their tricky phonics sounds, Year 1 are doing amazing maths, Year 2 are working in their Maths Challenge books whilst Miss Millington videos them doing their Times table Shootouts, Year 3 are writing in their new Remarkable Writing books, Year 4 are performing movement routines in the hall, Year 5 are in Barnsley on a school visit and Year 6 are learning to teach Mr Swallow how to order  large beer in German!

Just a typical end to our week at Birdwell School.

20180130-151638.jpg

We had a slight leg malfunction with our dragon.

They were tricky to work with but lots off fun.  read the posts below to find out how we designed and made them.

Today was the day we made our ice sculptures…

We began our week, looking at famous ice sculptures on the internet with Mrs Barratt and Mr Swallow. Then we looked at all the containers we had collected for making ice shapes.

Mrs Barrott taught us all about the names and properties of 3D shapes so we thought we would try and spot some around the class room. This helped us understand what shapes we could use in our ice sculptures.

We chose a creature to make in our teams and then tried out different containers to see what our sculptures might look like!  We new the names of most of the 3D containers but some were tricky!!!

We then sketched what our creatures would look like and chose the colours for the different body parts. We even had to decide where 2 different shapes would join so that Mr Swallow and Mrs Wright could help us stick a straw in our containers to help us join the pieces together!

We create Book Creator diaries of our build…watch the video playlist to see what we did.

We have been learning about 3D shape as part of our ice sculpture challenge

We had to learn the names of the shapes and then spot them around our classroom!

Amazing Arctic Animal Books

WE have been using the iPads to help us create a special v-book all about arctic creatures.

  • First, we had to use the ipads to find internet pages that gave us facts about our animals.  To do this we used KEY WORDS to find the right pages
  • Then, Mr Swallow showed us how to add extra key words (such as kids, KS1, Primary School) to help make sure the pages we found are safe and the right level for us to be able to understand
  • After that, we used a brilliant OCR reading app.  This let us take a phopto of a page and the computer voice read it out loud to us!  When we heard a good fact we added it to our books.
  • Our books are made on an app called Book Creator.  It lets us record our voices, not just words and pictures.  Check out the V-books we made on Book Creator, based on what we found out from the internet…

A Great big thank you to our friends in Year 5 who helped us with some of the tricky technical bits!!!

Our arctic animal book

Year 5 came in and helped us with our Arctic animal books. We had lots of fun making and recording our features for the books.
We used book creator to help us make our books and we searched for some pictures for our background on the Internet.

Now we are finally finished, thanks to year 5, and we are proud of what we have done.
